A few weeks late, but the second open wine night is Wednesday, 28th May, Fallon & Byrne, from 7pm.
Not sure what open wine nights are?
See my original post on open wine tasting which took place on the 15th of April in Fallon & Byrne and my subsequent write-up on what went on.
How does it work?
- Show up (please leave a comment below, to give me an idea of numbers).
- Buy a bottle (corkage may be waived, I’ll try and swing it again with the nice peeps at Fallon & Byrne)
- Open it, taste it and talk about it, with others
Is there a theme to the wine tasting?
Yes, a loose theme this time (perhaps even two). Last time we defaulted into a Pinot Noir taste-off.
As we’ve had just spiffing weather over the last few weeks and thoughts are all of summer, we’ll go with some whites. Depending on who shows up, we can fix the theme on the night.
Some wine tasting theme ideas:
- Comparing Chenin Blancs from the Loire versus South Africa (Caroline Byrne’s suggestion)
- Comparing Chardonnay from Chablis, other white Burgundies with those of the “new world”.
- A Riesling Renaissance: Riesling is back, comparing those from Germany, Alsace and those from South Australia
If you’d like to come put a comment below with a preferred theme, if you have one.
Where is it, again?
Fallon & Byrne
I’m going to say maybe… I wanted to make the last one, but it just didn’t work out, and we’re right in the middle of finalising our mortgage, so I can’t plan anything at the moment!! But I’ll confirm nearer the time and I hope that I can make it!
All the best for this one as well….The Riesling idea sound great…they are back (one of the few whites I like). Can’t wait to read the ‘review’.

I’d vote for the Riesling taste off. But will they have enough choices at F&B?
Looking forward to it. My vote is also for the Riesling theme (sorry Caroline).
A selection of wines from the Bordeaux region. Bordeaux is a difficult region to get on top of, because of the huge selection of wines and types, and because of the large number of very average wines which carry the Bordeau name.
Hi guys,
thanks for the suggestions. There should be plenty of choice in terms of Riesling, though I’ve had a lot recently so I’d be interested in the Chenin Blanc.
In terms of Bordeaux, great idea, Brian and perhaps one for the open wine tasting in June.

[...] next week’s open wine tasting will take place in Fallon & Byrne, next month’s wine tasting evening will take place in Enowine, IFSC on Wednesday, 11th June [...]
Lar,
1 thing about chenin and F&B. I had a quick look around at the weekend and they don’t seem to have many non-French examples, I didn’t see any from South Africa. Something to keep in mind before agreeing on a theme.
Cheers,
Will
Thanks guys, Riesling it is then
I’m going to try to make it this time, especially since you’ve decided to go with the Riesling taste off.
Hi Elizabeth,
looking forward to meeting you
