I’ve posted previously on the Laurenz V family of Grüner Veltliner white wines from Austria with the Charming and Friendly and, of course, lunch with the man himself, Laurenz V, Lenz Moser.
So, you could say I’m a bit of a fan of GrüVee and Laurenz V wines in particular.
So, when I heard about a new wine in the family, I knew I had to try it. Quicker than I could say Arnold Schwarzenegger, TXB wines had sent me over a sample of their new Silver Bullet Grüner Veltliner 2008.
Silver Bullet in a 500ml bottle
The Silver Bullet Grüner Veltliner comes in a novel 500ml bottle, which you don’t see all that often. The 500ml seems a format well suited to lunch for two – not too much, but enough to get a glass and a bit.
The 500ml format is also wine list friendly. Where diners still want a decent wine, but may not want to drink or spend a lot, this could be the perfect candidate. It’s worth noting that Grüner Veltliner is fast becoming a revered food wine.
How did it go down?
- On the nose: White pepper and floral (they’ve got it spot on with the label on the back)
- In the gob: Starts with a delicious zesty intense acidity which then develops into a lovely creamy smooth texture with a long lingering finish
Final price & availability
I’m not sure what the final retail price will be, nor where you’ll be able to get it, but I’ll be keeping my eyes open, it’s delicious
Absolutely love the label. Clean and simple. As you know, Lar, Austrian wines are right up my street and I’m always on the look out for new ones. DM me when you know more on price and availability. Thanks
Will do, Matt
Gorgeous bottle. Really impressive look. Clean, sort of industrial. Never considered a 500ml before. I suppose it would be just right for lunch for two, when not wanting to drink, or spend a lot.
I also quite like the Laurenz V. group of wines, the “Singing” in particular.
Looking forward to trying this one out. I know that Folio out in California imports Laurenz V. wines, so perhaps their Web site might tell us when & where it will become available.
Cool find.
Thanks for dropping in Laurie. I’ll get in touch with Laurenz V to see what the story is with release dates

As an Austrian living in Ireland now, I am so happy to see Austrian wines promoted. We have some of the best wines in the world. Years ago there was a scandal caused by sweeteners being added to bulk wines going to Germany. The Italians did worse and lives were lost by the Italian actions. It was the British press who destroyed the Austrian name. I am tempted to start an importing company to place more Austrian wines on the Irish market and allow the Irish palate taste some world class wines.
