It may have started with an Erdinger here, a Hoegarten there, but beer drinkers have been converting in their numbers to beers of character, of flavour and of provenance.

As Ruth Deveney of Deveney’s in Dundrum describes it, customers are looking for something “to taste and savour, not just swig”.

Ruth has hatched a plan to launch the inaugural Lughnasa Bottled Beer Festival, and plans to have it become an annual indie beer event.

The purpose of the event to promote craft independently brewed bottled beers regardless of the size of the brewery. While Heineken and Molson-Coors will be in attendance there is no sponsor, keeping the principle of the event intact and even playing field for all beers.

There are 14 beer importers involved with over 200 bottled beers from around the world allowing attendees to sample different beer styles, strengths and origins.

In addition to the beers, bluegrass band ‘Prison Love’ will provide the songs while artisan food vendors will provide the soakage.
