Video tasting: Amurensis Walk, an Irish red wine
Posted on March 20th, 2009
I bought the Amurensis Walk back in January and just got around to opening it for a tasting. I thought it could do with a bit more bottle age. Here’s how it went.
My one piece of advice on this is that if you want to drink this wine, get it nice and cold first.
Vitis amurensis: not your average wine grape
I swiped the following from some sort of online encyclopaedia which begins with “W”. The amur grape (Vitis amurensis), is a species of grape native to the Asian continent. Its name comes from the Amur Valley in Russia and China. It’s very resistant to frost, but is not tolerant to drought. By hybridization with the European wine grape (Vitis vinifera), several cultivars resistant to low temperatures are produced, such as “Zarja severa” (Northern dawn) and Rondo.
Howdy Lar,

Pop into my shop someday if you are in the neighbourhood,
Cheers,
S
Hi Steve,
great to hear from you. Popped into the shop a couple of weeks back but you were in India.
I’l definitely pop in, you’re on my route home
Hope the new shop is going well,
Lar
Hi Lar,
that was hilarious, watching you grimace as you tried to remain positive. Cork mightn’t be great for wine (yet) but at least they make good rugby players!
Gabriel
Brilliant…
Witty, descriptive and educational the perfect wine tasting, certain “presenters” in the wine board could learn from you..
Looking forward to the next review…
Hi Riona,
if I weren’t already hitched, I’d propose marriage – nicest comment, ever!
Lar
Hi Gabriel,
good rugby players, maybe. Great players? Not so sure ;) For that you need to come to Leinster
Lar
Ah tis the story of my life to date…
You’ll have to organise an open tasting and ill check out your dedicated groupies/grape’ies
I can remember the taste vividly
Hi Lar, finally got to see your vid. Interesting! Would you like a bottle of my ‘Lusca’ Irish wine to taste, if you have not already tasted it? I’m ‘reluctantly willing’ to put my head on your chopping block!!
David
Hi David,
I’d love to try the Lusca. I’ve heard good things about it. If it’s as good as your apple juice, you should have nothing to worry about!
Lar
Lar, for some reason I missed this when it was posted. Superbly entertaining, and very diplomatic – good on ya, I agree, fair play to Michael O’Callaghan for having a go.
Your face at 2:21 though is absolutely priceless :D
[...] out Lar’s grimaces in one of his tough, very easy to understand, but very fair reviews. It’s his tasting of the Amurensis Walk from the Thomas Walk [...]
